Learn to identify trenching and excavation hazards and understand safe shoring practices to prevent workplace injuries and accidents.
by FAST Rescue
Excavation and trenching activities are among the most hazardous tasks performed on construction sites. Even a minor oversight can lead to cave-ins, utility strikes, hazardous atmospheres, or other life-threatening incidents. This comprehensive Constructor Trenching and Shoring General Awareness course provides workers, supervisors, and constructors with the knowledge needed to recognize excavation hazards and understand the safe work practices required to prevent serious injuries and fatalities. Throughout the course, learners will develop a solid understanding of excavation and trenching fundamentals, including hazard identification, planning requirements, soil classification, legislative responsibilities, and the importance of competent inspections. Participants will explore the factors that affect trench stability, such as moisture, vibration, surcharge loads, weather, groundwater, adjacent structures, and previous excavation activities. The course also covers safe work practices for controlling hazardous atmospheres, maintaining safe access and egress, and responding to changing site conditions. Learners will gain practical knowledge of the various protective systems used to prevent cave-ins, including sloping, benching, timber shoring, hydraulic shoring, pneumatic shoring, trench boxes, and underpinning. The training explains when each system should be used, key inspection requirements, and the importance of following engineered designs and manufacturer specifications. Interactive knowledge checks throughout the course reinforce critical concepts and help learners build confidence in recognizing unsafe conditions before they become incidents. This course is ideal for construction workers, supervisors, project managers, health and safety representatives, and anyone involved in or working around excavation and trenching operations.
