by FAST Rescue
Spills can create serious risks to workers, the public, property, and the environment. Knowing how to recognize a spill, determine whether it can be safely managed, and take the appropriate action is essential for maintaining a safe workplace. This Spill Response online training course provides workers with practical knowledge for preventing spills, assessing hazards, and responding safely within the limits of their training, equipment, and workplace procedures. Learners will explore applicable spill-response legislation and workplace requirements, including occupational health and safety, environmental protection, fire code, and reporting considerations. The course explains how to distinguish between manageable and emergency spills and how factors such as the substance involved, quantity released, location, ventilation, environmental pathways, and fire or reactivity hazards influence the appropriate response. Participants also learn the importance of identifying spilled materials, consulting labels and Safety Data Sheets, selecting appropriate personal protective equipment, and knowing when to isolate an area and obtain qualified assistance. The training provides detailed guidance on workplace spill-response programs, emergency preparedness, risk assessments, contingency planning, reporting, documentation, waste disposal, incident investigation, and spill prevention. Learners are also introduced to common spill-response equipment, including absorbent pads, pillows, socks and booms, granular sorbents, neutralizers, overpack drums, spill pallets, recovery bags, and emergency patching materials. The course emphasizes proper spill-kit selection, placement, inspection, and compatibility with workplace hazards. This course is appropriate for workers, supervisors, managers, and other personnel who work with or around potentially hazardous materials.
