Course overview

About this course

Effective workplace inspections are one of the most important tools for preventing injuries, illnesses, property damage, and workplace incidents. This comprehensive course provides employees, supervisors, managers, Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) members, and Health and Safety Representatives with the knowledge and skills required to conduct thorough workplace inspections and contribute to a safer work environment. Participants will learn the purpose of workplace inspections and how they support an organization’s overall health and safety program. The course explores legislative requirements, worker rights and responsibilities, and the critical role inspections play in identifying hazards before incidents occur. Learners will gain an understanding of the various workplace elements that should be examined, including the work environment, equipment, processes, and workplace violence and harassment concerns. The training also examines the six major hazard classifications—safety, biological, chemical, ergonomic, physical, and psychosocial hazards—and provides practical guidance on recognizing and documenting potential risks. Participants will learn the principles of effective inspections, including observation techniques, hazard assessment, proper documentation, and the use of inspection checklists and reports. The course further outlines the four key stages of a successful inspection program: planning, conducting physical inspections, writing reports, and following up on recommendations. Emphasis is placed on corrective actions, communication, accountability, and continuous improvement to ensure identified hazards are addressed promptly and effectively. By the end of the course, learners will understand how to conduct meaningful workplace inspections, support legislative compliance, contribute to injury prevention efforts, and help foster a strong culture of health and safety throughout the organization.
